Curt’s Team

The Curt’s Ride participants are known as “Curt’s Team.” We consist of a group of otherwise sane, reasonable, and mature individuals who commit themselves to pursuing the insane goal of pushing their bicycles and themselves to commemorate family, friends and all others who have been directly and personally affected by cancer.

Some members from previous years have been included with this year’s team because they are continuing to help with our fundraising efforts even though they are not able to ride.

Dave Lavery
Dave Lavery

Dave Lavery, founder of “Curt’s Ride”

Dave’s dad, John Lavery, was lost to prostate cancer, but not before he gave Dave powerful lessons about  commitment and the importance of keeping your word. “We established the Curt’s Ride to Cure Cancer project for my dad and all others affected by cancer. This is our way to honor them, help with the search for a cure, and support cancer patients and families.”

Stacey McClain

Stacey McClain co-founder of “Curt’s Ride”

Curt’s Ride is a cause that resonates very close to Stacey’s heart. She has biked every year since 2010 when she and Dave founded the ride. She bikes 620 miles again this year to commemorate: her mother, DJ Harms (1989); sister, Stephanie Dooley (1996); and father, Chuck McClain (2001). Many thanks to the rest of Curt’s team in making this a fun adventure and to all of our donors and sponsors for your support and generosity.

Lisa May
Lisa May

Lisa May

Lisa is a native Floridian and Curt’s Ride veteran, beginning this adventure with the 2011 Curt’s Ride, which happily coincided with her 50th birthday. It was also not long after colon cancer had claimed her beloved mother-in-law, Bobbi Jackson, in 2010. Since that first year, Lisa has ridden for friends and family, in honor of survivors and memory of far too many, including her father, Ken May, whose glioblastoma led to his passing in 2012. This year she rides in their memory, as well as for friends who have survived cancer or are undergoing treatment now.

Joe Parrish

Joe Parrish

Joe is an aerospace engineer with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. His interests include cycling, flying, and travel. This year, Joe is pedaling in memory of his mother Agi Parrish and friend Eryn Creedon, along with many other heroes and survivors among his family and friends.

Jeff Wetzel
Jeff Wetzel

Jeff Wetzel

Jeff lives and works in Washington, DC with educational robotics. Jeff is incredibly lucky to only have one name come to mind when he thinks of family and friends that have lost their battle with cancer. He rides to keep it that way.

Sam Wetzel
Sam Wetzel

Sam Wetzel

When Sam was 11, her best friend’s mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. Since then, she has known many others who have been affected by cancer, and it never seems to be far away. The helplessness she felt when her best friend’s mom succumbed to the disease is why she rides.

Mike and Chelle Youmans

Mike is a mentor with FIRST Robotics Team 116, otherwise known as “Dave’s Team”. This will be Mike’s second Curt’s Ride, riding in memory of his mother, who was lost to cancer in 2002, and in honor of his wife and mother-in-law (both cancer survivors). This year, his wife Chelle will be joining him on their tandem bicycle! Chelle rides in memory of two dear friends who were lost to cancer in 2012 and 2014.

Curt’s Ride Host

Deb Lavery Powers

Deborah Lavery Powers, has hosted the team for 7 years.

Deb, while understanding, oh so well, that cancer research is of paramount importance in saving–and extending the lives –of those we love. We lost Dave’s dad to prostate cancer in 1982. Cancer research since that time has made it possible for Dave’s brother John (melanoma) to continue to be a cancer survivor. And gave our Jim three years to enjoy more of life after cancer surgery. She so honors Curt’s team for once again raising tons of money for cancer research.
